Tumblr is an all in one social network site. It could post everything all at once. Such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and more. Even you own an iphone, you can just update it anytime you want at anywhere you are.

Things To Say After So Long

Frankly speaking, I haven’t been blogging like I did in theold days. Talking and ranting about lots of different subjects. But I’ve cometo realize, I might just do one right now after doing so much video editing’s,pending works and currently editing a corporate video for IGS College. Considerthis as my recess.

I wanna start off by talking a bit about ‘Break – Episodes’.For the past few months, I’ve been nagged, cursed and critized by theinpatient-rude-hating viewers about the delay. There’s so many reasons for thisbut I don’t expect anybody to understand. You see, I don’t make the show torise up my name, I make them because I wanna try see whether my skills areworth making Brunei entertainment scene something extraordinary. You see somany hidden talents around you whom are shy to try out things. For instance,why know how to do something but you’ve got nobody to share it with. My pointis, I’m experimenting most of the time. I actually got what I was expecting tosee, good results. I’ve been getting lots of mails since Episode Zero waslaunched last year. My friend request on Facebook are building up. Lots givingsupport, lots admire my work, lots interested in filmmaking and lots asking fortips on how to start off.

This is what I also wanted to see. I can see thechanges after I first made everything happen. Not to sound cocky (like some ofyou of there), but everything happens for a reason. Since then, I’ve seen lotsof new comers in videography, short films and weddings. This is developingpretty fast and that’s a good thing.

I’m not saying I’m smart but to know me, you need tounderstand me. Some may not like the way I work, interact or joke, some mightsay ‘He has a point’. The reason some can’t keep up with me is the same reasonwhy anybody would run off and do it by themselves because they’ve grabbedeverything they know about what I’m doing and suddenly forgets me. AGAIN, I’mnot saying I’m better, I’m saying I don’t like anybody kiss-assing me becausethey want something.

So applying this to BREAK, there are some who are doingthis. You will know sooner or later. I may be too nice, I may be too mean. Endof the day, the results is for anybody to see for themselves. Basically, Breakhas not been moving much due to behaviors. But everyone kept saying I am thethat owns the show and I’m the one that’s not doing anything about it. Let’smake it clear, how on earth am I gonna work with someone who backstabs you fromthe back? I couldn’t work with people like this. Clearly, some of you may know,typical Bruneians always do this. That’s why I’ve learn a lot being a citizenmyself. I would admit I am in a way the same but my role is always going by asa person who sees things with common sense.

Bruneians don’t like to be toldwhat to do, Bruneians don’t like smart ass, Bruneians critize because they arejealous and some are always talking shit even when they know they are wrong.It’s hard to admit they are wrong because it will embarrass themselves byothers. So what do they do? They just do what they normally do, keep oncritizing and getting everyone else involve.

Please… this is just childish. In fact, I AM dealing withkids and that explains everything. ‘BREAK’ shall continue. Episode 3.1 is onits way finally. Don’t worry. To the many supporting ones that CAN wait, thankyou so very much. Its worth waiting I tell you.

During the long hiatus with Break, I still did short filmssuch as ‘Surat Teknologi’ as well as ‘PlayBoi Moden’. I came to realize that, Ineeded something new to experiment. After being introduced to a Youtuber called‘Freddie Wong’, I became inspired by the art works of Visual Effects (VFX)using Adobe After Effects (AE).

When I first started with business in videography, my onlyweakness was doing special effects. This goes to animations, superimpose,titling and etc. I’ve always wanted to learn but it was too complicated for me.I couldn’t even do Photoshop. I’ve tried a lot but I gave up. With FreddieWong, it accrued to me that if I wanted to start trying out action films, Ineed to know how to do use AE. So I’ve got a friend who thought we the fewerbasics and carried on to read on more about it over the net and downloadedtutorials.

Day after day, I practiced. Things I don’t know, I ask. Things Iwanted to try, I search. I became even more active and took my cameras andtried shooting things before I really start.

Then it came to ‘Hostage’. My first VFX action/comedy film.I have to say, eventhough I created it but I’m proud to say that I did great asa newbie. I kept the trademark to have local Bruneians accents as the language,I made it funnier cos Bruneians love comedies and added a few touch on usingsomething I normally do in my other short films. (Which I shall not say). Afterdesigning the whole concept, I decided to carry on making them AS practice ANDentertainment whilst the hiatus on BREAK. So one thing let to another, wecreated more action/comedy films with the same actors. Main actors is myself aswell as Mienul Rashid (may recognize him from Break / singer).

For some reasons, viewers were beginning to enjoy it morethan they do with Break. This is from what I see because my mailbox is floodinglike an ant farm. Lots ofquestions, suggestions and admirable fellow people. This is partly a beginningbecause there are lots more I’ve yet to try with VFX. I’m willing to trycompiled them to be a movie.

Visual Dimensions Production is working on lots of newdifferent things. Even with this new role I’m learning, I’ve also included theaction to Pre Wedding videos. Check this out ‘Mr & Mrs’. The client lovedit after purposing it to them during the meeting. I got bored with boring oldwalk in the park and camera shy clients. I think every client should havesomething they wanna do. Only problem is, they are too shy. But not my recent client‘Alimin + Tuty’, dare devils wanted to try something new and I’m proud of that.

As you can see, this is leading to real work now, weddingsespecially. I am indeed piling up with wedding videos I need to edit andbelieve it or not, in between creating short films, I still editing weddings. I know its tough workdoing all at once but this is me, I am indeed a busy person. I’ve got peoplesaying its hard to contact me because I’m a spoon-full of everything thesedays.

Its such a crazy moment in some cases but I’ve managed touse this as a lifestyle and routine. However, I’ve got great people im working with and it takes a bit ofmy business of the edge. I think that’s it for now, the long update abouteverything happening so far. I’m kind tired now and tomorrow shall be anotherBUSY day!

Ninja (Short Film)

Here's one called 'Ninja'. This was a real challenge. Why? Because I had to learn how to play the 'Nunchuku' again and teaching it to a girl. When i was young, one of my favorite 'thing' is Nunchuku. I used to play around with my friends homemade one and practice. For no reasons, it became a piece of hobby. Perhaps, a talent. In the video, no fake editing cuts and angles, it was both characters ACTUALLY playing the Nunchuku.

I'm still a bit rusty and I had no idea its abit difficult when using gloves. So I found some Nunchuku somewhere in Bandar and decided to buy them and use them as props BEFORE the idea of ninja came up. A friend of mine introduced ninja to be another short film when she realizes that I had the stuff. Including the Anime sword which you see in the video. (Apparently from an Anime called Bleach). So we had to come up with a costume. I was actually going for those street-ninja styles by using boots. Not the actual ninja dressup. (There was a sarcastic comment about my ninja using boots).

I loved the idea, sat with Mienul and discussed about what to do with it. My action-comedy short films MUST include VFX and we thought about on what we could do in this one. Since I'm still new with VFX, i wanted to try lots of different things by referring to other videos and tutorials and use them in our short films.

After the short film 'Getaway', I was really fascinated with light saber effects (Star Wars) but had difficulty looking for the right one. (Long story). But then when Ninja idea came up, i wanted to try use those light saber effects. So I thought about using a NERF gun (Maverick) as a laser gun. It worked and was quite happy with it. Secondly, blowing up people is also a good practice cos now, knowing the basics, you could blow up a building which is yet to try one day.

Mr & Mrs : Pre Wedding Film

With all the action fever going on, I've proposed an idea to my clients to try out something different. Something which I've been dying to try. Luckily, after showing them my short action/comedy skits, they were willing to take the challenge and they were cool enough to also make it as unique.

In the pre wedding film, it took us one whole day to shoot. I've also used some of my actors. Storyline was quiet flat but i think it went quite well. I was trying to imitate the whole 'Mr & Mrs Smith' style by having lots of explosion inside the house. But instead, I couldnt think of anything to blow up and there was limited lights.

Stop & Getaway (2 New Short Films)

Let's be honest, well, let me be honest... Freddie Wong is indeed cool. Love his videos, love his style. 'Stop' is abit similar to his 'Time Freeze Shootout'. I always find freezing time one of the most brilliant kind of effects. There are a couple of movies I've seen includes these visual effects and always wondered how they do it. Well, after learning some basic tutorials, it wasn't as hard as I thought it'd me. But anyways, here it is...'STOP'. Watch Mienul freeze the soldiers in this episode.

Getaway : In this episode, Adam was asked to film Mienul's performances as a sentry. The boss had placed 3 enemies inside a house. The title says it all actually. Enjoy.

Hostage (First Action/Comedy Short Film)

Here it is... After experiencing so much short films from comedy to romance and horror; thought i might try out action. Action is probably one of the most challenging ones. Why? Usually props and also some visual effects to create explosions, smoke, bullets etc.

After doing research on some famous Youtuber, Freddie Wong, I came across to an idea where I would finally start learning a new software which I've been meaning to do for so long but never had the time. This software is called 'Adobe After Effects'. Picked up a few basic tips from a friend and the rest were watching tutorials all over the net.

The Production came to agreement to try out this next epic adventure in the action world as we all took our times gathering all the materials we could get. Especially the guns. The attire we all cheap fake ones found in many different places including Miri.

So here's a new action first written spontaneously. Enjoy.

First official job project in KL

I have been so busy to be updating my status but here it is. I went to KL short notice on the 22nd March when i was called up by (Wedding Malaya OR Malaya Production) for a project to shoot a TV commercial (TVC) for one of the top textile labels in KL, 'Jakel' as a camera operator. I'm really honored and proud to be saying that this is my first official job project in KL.

I've experience even more with TV commercials from almost A-Z. From setting up to end product. Working with The Malaya was such an enjoyable experience as this thought me so much of the values in getting on board with something I've always wanted to try. TV Commercials. It's also such a pity, our local industry in TVC could not see my capabilities to do so and it pisses me off that it HAS TO BE A REAL PRODUCTION HOUSE in order to get jobs like this. My company does not have an office and that's one of the reasons why. Secondly, my in-house cameras are DSLRs where as such, shooting the TVC for 'Jakel', I operated the Canon 5D MkII!

But before i get on the wrong foot, I don't watch local channels and the only TVC I've seen before was ads for DST. Other than that, car commercials which isn't a product by locals. So, reading over what I just said, I don't think I'm interested anymore.

I'd love to share more infos on the shoot, behind the scenes footages and photos but I don't think i could just yet until the video is officially in the clients hands and launched on TV3 and perhaps Astro. I may also upload a rough-cut on the video. Need to ask permission.

Looking forward for more jobs in KL. A huge thank you to The Malaya for hiring me. They've been so great to me, wonderful hospitalities and so.

My 7th March Day

Apparently, RTB Rampai Pagi was too interested with me and called me up to do an interview session about my reputation in the media industry. More about wedding cinematography, my experience with shooting celebrity Sheikh Muszaphar wedding in Kuala Lumpur, my journey from the beginning with filmmaking and also my band, Not Famous.

It wasn't what i've expected to be from typical TV station. What i mean by this was, the show was really easy, straight-forward and it didn't consist of speaking in a primary language, Malay. It was random and I was speaking in Eng-Lay or Malay-ish which made it pretty comfortable cos that's the way we Bruneian's talk. Why go all standard right? Its a local TV station who is interviewing a local bloke like me. Cool part was, I didn't have to go to the studio and instead they came over to shoot me in my own so-called office!

In the afternoon on the other hand, I attended the British High Commission 'UK In Brunei' video competition that includes 13 enteries where I was picked to be one of the judges with 3 others. Yes, Anak Brunei Reeda Malik was also one of the judges. It was really cool of them to invite me and i was honored that one of the heads actually watched 'Break'. My mini web-series drama on Youtube. We sat there for almost an hour watching the videos one after another and in between each videos, we discussed about the video about messages that was sent. I also had the privilege to have my crew to shoot multi-cam to have this as a Behind-The-Scenes with the judges which was also a sponsor, a thank you for inviting me kinda way. The 4 winners were picked and i will also be attending on the 15th March for prize presentation to the winners.

Abbee + Soed's Videos

Here's the highlight video of their wedding shot on the 18th-20th February and was edited during my stay in Kuala Lumpur. Edited to be shown on the night of their wedding reception which was held somewhere at PutraJaya.

The Pre Wedding video is perhaps a post wedding video. We didn't have time to complete the video to be shown in Brunei as the groom was Malaysian and we had problems with sorting out the time to shoot. So, whilst i was in KL, we shot some of the parts, inserts, for the video that was also to be played during the night. Shot entirely on the 25th February and was editing this masterpiece less than 24hours! Reception took place on the 26th.

I must say, this was really challenging and luckily it was all done accordingly without any problems. Finished compiling the video, on to my pendrive at about 5pm and rushed to the venue ShangRila Resort (where they got dressed).

Here I am at Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur. I'm here to shoot a wedding reception for my clients 'Abbee & Soed'. The wedding was held in Brunei on the 18th-20th February and their reception is held in KL. The story behind this? They were suppose to do a pre-wedding in Brunei but it was difficult since both were apart most of the time. Date was set last year but I couldn't make it to KL because my son was born. And so, last minute plans, they've decided to do post wedding instead. Whilst the idea came around, they've suggested me to shoot the reception too. Its an honor cos I get to travel AND try out something different.

Above is a highlights video I'm editing to be shown on the night of their reception. All Akad Nikah, Malam Berbedak and Bersanding compiled together as a recap on for Malaysian families (Groom side) who couldnt make it during the actual wedding. I must say, it was really a fun one to edit. I was so used to Chinese wedding Same-Day-Edit, I've actually picked up a few new ideas on how to make the video more interesting to watch.

Here is my work-station. I've recently purchased a Mac Book Pro 13" just so I could do the editing here in KL. I also needed it to do a few more upcoming Chinese wedding for Same-Day-Edit. I find it pretty difficult to rush home and transfer memory cards that took ages to wait and end up being panic whether I could finish editing on time. Anyways, I've never owned a laptop before.

I mentioned that I would be doing a post-wedding video before the reception. AND i've also mentioned that I was editing a highlights video. Well, things couldn't get any better. Now that I've finished editing highlights, I'm suppose to start editing the post wedding now. But due to conversion of my clips, I have to wait until its done. We spent a whole day shooting in various places around KL and this might be interesting. The idea is there and the concept is superb. Fingers crossed, I don't wanna panic. May need to figure out the arrangements after this. It's 5am now and I've cos less than 10-hours to complete this before heading off to one of the shopping malls to shoot the bride getting make-up.

TimeLapse From The 10th

Here's an 8 seconds timelapse I did during my stay in KL (currently at this moment). Did this lastnight. Nothing fancy. Just continuous recording. Set up my Canon 550D 1080p on tripod, obviously and ran 32GB straight. Although, I needed to manually hit record button after duration stopped at 12mins.

It was raining heavily before and that's why you might have noticed some rain drops in the frame far-right. The problem I'm encountering is how to set a proper setting so that when night falls, it wont go too dark? I shall experiment using auto on the next one.

The interview also includes few never before seen clips, bloopers as well as what's happening behind the scenes during the shooting of the episodes Zero, 1.1 & 2.1.

White Light - Adam Groves (Music Video)

I'm not sure whether I've posted this up yet but from the looks of it I havent. This music video was posted up 2 months back and I've forgotten all about it. Here's a music video shot by 2 of my fellow filmmaker friends, Muiz (Rocky Bee) & Aznniel Yunus. Shot with 2 Canon 550Ds with a Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Canon 50mm f1.4 lenses which was used for amazing depth of fields and night-shots.

It was a random night where we sat outside and talked about films. I've decided to ask them to shoot my music video. The song 'White Light' was in my hands for quite some times and would like to try do something with it. The music was composed by myself with another close mate Azzatul Amin (Atoi). It was recorded purely digitally through Adobe Audition as well as Fruity Loops. Shitty mics and not so good mixers which had been connected into my processor.

The video itself was edited on Final Cut Pro and color graded with 3-way color. I wanted it to look like those hip-hop & RnB looks which shed greenish color all over. So I've created the looks purely by messing around with knobs and honestly to say, I think it looked great compared to the original which was shot in auto-white balance (camera) showing really poor colors during the night scene.

The clips inserted was also random showing myself waiting for a call-back. I must say, this video is lack of inserts and perhaps made me look abit more self-centered showing myself in multiple angles. But as said, this was random and experiment.

Surat Teknologi (Shot with iPhone 4)

Believe it or not, the title says it all. This experimental short film entitled 'Surat Teknologi' was shot with the iPhone 4. I was astounded when i saw some fellow filmmakers using this for weddings & corporate videos. It looked pretty cool and it looked so much better than the above. One thing that bothers me was the exposure levels. It kept on closing whenever it hits bright. Couldn't do much with it. As i said, its just an experiment. It was wicked.

We actually mounted a car iphone holder taping it onto a Manfrotto tripod.

However, throughout the shoot, I've decided not to use the tripod as it was so much hassles. The iPhone was too light that we couldn't stabilize the dolly/slider properly. (See first frame of the film, long shot). Audio was recorded with Edirol by Roland and was joint with the Rode Videomic. Recording seprately and sync in post.

The short film is actually a rip-off from Wong Fu Production. I personally liked it very much, 'Romance Ruins Technology : The Letters' (Youtube) and decided to do a remake in Brunei version. Its hilarious and it was enjoyable to shoot. We also have alot of good feedbacks from this experiment.

Julian + Jenny

Here's another pre-wedding music video I enjoyed shooting. The couple had been going back and forth looking for ideas for their video and eventually agreed to try out the Taylor Swift one called 'Mine'. We shot this video in one day and in only one place only, the Groom's house (Julian).

They've also did some decorations outside the house by hanging down photos on pieces of strings which looked absolutely beautiful when I arrived. On the night of their reception, I could see lots of their guests enjoyed watching it.

I've done a few SDEs but honestly, I think this is the best one so far. I worked faster on this one and managed to put smiles on their faces as they walked into the hall for the second time.

Yuhan + Sheena

The video above is what I like to call, creative. The clients wanted to do something abit different and added scenes from their most memorable moments together. This was probably one of the most worked I've done with Pre-Weddings. The video was well-prepared, scripts, storyboards and off course locations, dates and time we organized professionally. It almost came out to be an actual film. It took a day to shoot and obviously a really tiring one too.

This one is the Same Day Edit (SDE). I must say, this was a really challenging one. The locations of bride and groom were across the country (Bandar - KB) and I was running out of time to edit the video for the night's reception. Luckily all went well. Enjoy.

Walter + Yvonne : Pre Wedding

Here's a surprise video for the bride, 'Yvonne' during their reception night. Walter decided to sing one of Yvonne's favorite songs. From what I've heard, Yvonne kept nagging Walter to perform on their reception night but Walter however wasn't keen to do it as he already planned out a romantic surprise for his wife.

It was indeed a surprise which led Yvonne to shed tears after watching the previewed video during the night of the reception which was held at The Empire Hotel, Grand Hall.

Walter is a singer of Paspot 2 Fame (P2F) season 2. We shot this music video on a rooftop, a building located somewhere at Airport Mall. This was really a fun music video shoot.

You're My Everything

Here's a simple recording, very basic, testing out my new Edirol By Roland audio recorder. It's almost like the Zoom H4N actually but PR-09 did not have any XLR jacks. So I made a few optional cables to suit my needs. This one was recorded with a stereo to mono jack for the guitar and stereo to XLR for my Shure SM-57 mics.

It was recorded separately to 2 different tracks as I'm still not sure how to do multiple recording with my mixer which is not with my at the moment. So I compiled both wave tracks on to my SoundTrack Pro and slightly touched-up the noises that was coming from the background.

This is NOT MY PERFECT recording and I'm sure as hell aware that I don't sing well nor play the guitar in the right tune. As I said, this is only a testing of my audio recorder. Aside from that, I wanted to try make a music video as if I'm singing it LIVE. So I did 3 different takes lip-sing along with the playback from my monitor speaker. I must say, it looks alright don't you think?

Shot on my Canon 550D with a Sigma 10-20mm f4 and a Canon 50mm f1.8 lenses. Color graded with Magic Bullet Looks.

Astronaut Wedding Video By Candid Syndrome Malaysia

Here's a video edited by Saiful Nang of Candid Syndrome (Malaysia). If you have not read my recent post, I'm one of 9 videographers that shot this wedding on the 10th October 2010 a.k.a 10.10.10, wedding of the decade in Kuala Lumpur for Dr Sheikh Muszaphar & Datin Dr Halina Yunos. It is not shot entirely by me and my Bruneian team but a mixture with other awesome malaysian wedding videographers operating sliders & steadicams. I think it looks great.

I was also chosen as Chief video in the team. But, as I announced to them during my nervous briefing session (Will do quick edit of Behind-The-Scenes) for the first time infront of many others, 'I'm NOT going to BE that bossy type captain'. And from this video, I was impressed with their work, very much. Really enjoyed working with them as a team, cooperative, supportive and shall one day be another experience together. Just look at the video and you'll see a wonderful layer of 9 creative videographers capturing the moments in a number of angles that turned out a incredible outcome.

The video above IS edited by Candid Syndrome Malaysia. However, I/We was advised that i/We (2 others) can edit our version, credited with Candid Syndrome after 30 days. May not be that soon cos I'm stomped with weddings that needs to be done!

Shooting Astronaut's Wedding 10.10.10

October 10th, CandidSyndrome's Saiful Nang flew me in to shoot the biggest wedding in Kuala Lumpur of 2010. Who? Dato' Sheikh Muszaphar, first Malaysian astronaut to travel into space and Datin Dr. Halina. It was a great honor to be called in from Brunei and shoot the wedding. Like I've always wanted, work abroad.

Apparently, my partner could not join me and I had to gang up my own team from Brunei with Bahurm Jaili & Koo Jinchen. They wanted videographers who uses DSLRs to shoot wedding and only both I could think off. We brought along a number of gears. I thought, it was only the three of us until arriving in KL, there was a briefing by Ahim Rani (Candid Syndrome Brunei) and Saiful Nang that there were another 6 more videographers. It was amazing. Enjoyed working with them.

However, what was even cooler was for them to pick me as team captain of the video team. Called me up to the front and just talked about anything to describe, to plan and to structure the movements of the team members. I was nervous but it went okay, I hope so. The other guys were friendly indeed and it was enjoyable to be working with them too.

There was only 2 events, Akad Nikah & Reception at the PICC Hall. Its basically something like ICC Brunei, only massive! Huge! Here is a photo of the end of the event on 10.10.10, all photographers and videographers. I'm sure as hell as lucky to be called in for this because it was a wonderful experience to be there, meeting up cool, creatively people, getting to know newer friends and moments like this is absolutely a blast!

If any of the crews from the above photo is to see this post, I just wanna say THANKS alot! Hope to see you all again one day in a different event or maybe KL hangout etc. :)

All videographers used DSLRs, mostly the Canon 7Ds along with 1X 5D MkII and a Canon Ti2. I havent got the time to edit this video yet but will do. I still have lots of weddings to finish and to start editing. I've also managed to shoot some behind-the-scenes which should be interesting to post up.

Bracun & Pace For Feature Length Movie

I've been hanging around these 2 local comedians 'Bracun & Pace' for almost a month. Their manager, Sheikh Bin Khalid as well as their PA Yatie HMY agreed on using me as production, to produce their first feature length movie. As of this moment, I'm still structuring their movie, (storyboard that is) and script will be partly written by the popular duo and myself along with the production team.

There is no schedules yet, there is no rush. I'm joining them as a team to capture some B-Rolls in their every week performances. I figured, these footages may come in handy for their movie. I have not gather up crews and actors yet but I will need to turn a one man into a big production team.

Pebble Ridge Music Video, Most Expensive Dolly & First Kiss Scene

A dear friend of mine Faadzil Osman, recently acted in my recent short film 'Janji Melayu' as well as my ex-manager for my band Not Famous , returns after 3 years from his music course Manchester, England. During his studying period, he formed a band called Pebble Ridge . A fine music producer, they've recorded over 10 songs, basically an album. He flew in his 2 friends, David (Gutiarist) and Kirsy (Vocalist) for holidays as well as shooting their first music video, 'Down'. Apparently, it's one of Kirsy's favorites.

Shooting this video at about 3am-6am in the morning at you know where this is. The only underground tunnel we have in Brunei. It was exciting and yet also insanely challenging. Why?

This is why. Me and Faadzil was watching a 'Making' of a particular music video and saw them using this technique which was cool. As one of the members of the band said, 'We have the most expensive dolly we can find'. And yes, WE HAVE THE MOST EXPENSIVE DOLLY WE CAN FIND.

Its very smooth and its highly recommended to try if you are really considering in getting a proper track dolly. Can't wait til you see the smoothness. Engine's off, Faadzil controlled the wheels whilst I have Adi (Drummer for Karacoma, local band) and David to push the car slowly. We did also encountered some difficulties in maintaining the speed of both the car and the singer in order to keep the frames/depth of field consistent.

Here, using my Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens, I tried doing something i always wanted to do with a fix aperture zoom lens, especially on an up-beat rock music. Wait and see. Towards the end of the 6-minutes music, I've encountered foggy lens which took sometime to heal. Decided to stop, and not waste time. Used the 30mm f1.4 on the 5th minute.

I've shot several short films over the years, and tried different genre's of shorts, from horror, comedy and latest action. I've never tried romance. It's not easy to make romance without holding hands or huggings or even a smooch on the cheeks in Brunei. Wonder how viewers will react to my latest music video. LOL!

Canon 60D

A friend of mine recently bought the Canon 60D. Having no knowledge about the DSLR camera he asked me to show him some of the basics with controls for photography. I also took the liberty to see the video modes.

Finally, the Sound Recording menu, audio levels and wind filters. 60D has them. Before 60D, the only DSLR that had these controls is the Canon 5D MK2's updated firmware. You can't get these on neither of the Canon T2i (550D) or Canon 7D.

Off course, what I liked about the 60D was the articulating LCD which is very useful in shooting videos in tight situations. I'm really considering to have one of this one day. Its exactly the same as the Canon T2i.

Lumix G2 Test - Review - Janji Melayu Short Film

A friend of mine introduced me to a friend of his yesterday for no reasons whatsoever. Chit chatted for a while and showed him my work. Apparently this man was also into filmmaking and bought himself a 'Panasonic Lumix DMC G2' DSLR camera. I knew about this camera when browsing through some filmmakers site before I bought my Canon 7D. It looks rad, its the first Panasonic DSLR exchangeable lens camera and it shoots in 720p 30fps, almost like the Canon 500D BUT, looking at the LCD on camera, the colors are exquisite indeed. It reminds me of the Sony EX1.

So I thought to myself, randomly asking both my friends whether they'd like to go out for a quick experimental test on the new device which he bought a week before Hari Raya. Agreed. Took them to the Muara-Beach (As i heard it has been renovated and looks quite pretty now) and spontaneously made up a simple story of what was going to be shot. It was called 'Janji Melayu'. The problem with me is that, I'd rather experiment it out on a short film rather shooting something environmental.

So far, the articulating LCD is really useful for HDSLR filmmakers. I seriously love it. Now that I've seen the advantages, I can see how the Canon 60D is also similar in its performance. The guy bought it package, came with 2 sets of lenses but only played with the kit-lens, the 14-42mm. It's smaller than a Canon rebel-sized one and its too complicated, well...too complicated for me as this is my first time touching something else besides Canon. It has auto-focus on video mode which was quite cool. If the object is moving, it'll automatically detect to get in focus WITHOUT even to touch any of the buttons. So far, I've not seen any of the Canon's nor Nikon's do this. The other thing that's disappointing after dumping SD files on to my computer was not being able to play the videos on any of my players such as Quicktime, VLC, RealPlayer, Windows Media except for Movist which I use to watch downloaded Bluray films.

Why? The format reads only in .mts instead of H.264 and .mov. Which was weird cos I've never heard or seen this type before and so I asked a couple of friends of mine who all said the same thing, it will not read in any of the players. Neither will it be able to import to editing suite, my Final Cut Pro. They mentioned a few software converters I could use but I keep running into those licensed ones. I wanted something quicker, free, just to use it for this one time. So I found a free software, easy to use called 'Leawo Mac Video Converter Pro'.

Siti + Rizal Highlights

Here's a quick highlight video I've just edited a few hours ago. I was referred to the clients by Masamichi Studios. I'm in good terms with Jason Ong, the owner. I was asked to shoot the bride's side whilst his in-house videographer was shooting the groom's. He goes by the name, Nonong. A talented Filipino videographer whom I think is really good. Now, there is no competition whatsoever and neither does any of this small talk have to do anything with it.

It starts getting interesting until I discovered that Nonong, posted up his highlight version (the groom) months ago before mine and I haven't seen the video until just recently right after I posted mine up on Facebook an 1 hour ago.
I was shocked to see that the song that I used on this video was exactly the same one as his. Now...that's a real coincidence don't you think? It really is. Over a billion songs in the world, I picked the exact same one FOR the same client. Now, I didn't know. But I think, I should just leave it alone. The clients may not mine but to me, its funny to have 2 different versions from 2 different videographers. Check out Nonong's version. :) Sweet. Its like having the same mind.

So Much So Little Time

Its like a few more days now til Hari Raya and I've been in editing mode for about 2weeks straight. Haven't even shower for 48hours and sleeping for over 24hours. Tired. Back hurts. I'm still forcing myself to try get as much done. Also been shooting mini-drama in between and that's also a pain. Keep thinking, will I get any of these videos done before Hari Raya. Too much, I'm piling up. I guess this also means, Visual Dimensions Production wedding services are doing quite well! That's a good thing though. Few more bookings towards the end of the year. Lots of inquiries for 2011, some confirmed.

Leaving for KL by the end of this month to participate in a 'Directing WorkShop'. Also doing a Pre-Wedding video for a client whilst I'm there. The Bride's fiance is Malaysian. Should be interesting because I've always wanted to shoot something, work-related someplace else. I'm sure there are tons of ideas and beautiful environment to capture. Also be meeting up some celebrities, I suppose.

What else... I don't know. I'm just reporting my latest updates. Okay, nothing. That's it.

Break 'Pilot'

Some of you may know my 'The Jo & Jul Show' (2009) which includes only 2 episodes and some of you may not. Well, for those who don't here is a link. Episode 1 & Episode 2. Its a 10-minute short film comedy which was suppose to be an ongoing entertainment. It didn't work out but it DID make a huge impact during the days on the local scenes. I was indeed proud with the response and support until one of them had to go abroad studies and show is canceled.

I've always wanted to make a drama of my own. But here? In Brunei? With my brain? Put both together and It'll never happen. Why? MIB.......(Melayu Islam Beraja). There's just so much errors. I know this cos I've once worked ina production in a very short period. Also picked out lots of infos from friends in the media field.

To me, filmmaking is not only a hobby, its my career. It's my job and its entertainment. Also, every short film I do is actually an experiment. I'm trying out different things, cameras, concepts, ideas etc. 'The Jo & Jul Show' was actually an experiment on whether I could get audience/viewers to enjoy a good laugh. It worked. And the idea was purposely to create characters that relates in the local scenes by adding some style. Such as episode 1 'The One With The Race' is basically about a self-centered person who cares only for himself. Secondly, never judge a fat guy that he'll lose in a race.

'Break' is actually short for 'BreakTime' OR 'Recess as in, in school. Should notice the school uniform from the photos. The idea came to me one day that I wanted to try something with fighting. I've never done one before. Its pretty challenging because on the first day, I had to to direct the 2 actors to fight. Not that I know but by experiencing from movies I've watched. Every punch/kick are according to steps. We had to create the steps by making a partision then joining them up in post. It was hard I tell you. As for scripts, I decided to do this one in Malay. Brunei, Malay. Not standard. I hate it. I never liked the Brunei dramas where they write standard malay. Seriously, anybody around you talk standard? No right? They talk normal with the 'Ani...', 'Atu...', 'Awu...', 'Inda...'. So thats how I want them to speak, according to my scripts. I think its just way better an original.

The actors I've chose are not professionals. They are hand-picked to match the description on the character I've created. But everyone learns, and they'll get better and better once they've experience this. I've decided to shoot this with my Canon 7D as it is easy to carry around. Not mentioning how hard it was shooting 'The Jo & Jul Show' carrying the huge cam around and people can get nosey during a shoot. DSLRs are way easier to hide if you know what I mean. Even got the chance to test out the Rode mics out in the open field and the sound pickup on distance are brilliant.

Why 'Episode 0'? Because its my first pilot and introducing the actors before the actual story starts. Not that I've any idea what'll happen. There's just too many ideas I'm deciding at the moment. As for now, I've finish 3minutes of the short film. Got another 7minutes to shoot. Not sure how to do this with all the fasting this month. (Ramadhan). In fact, I've learn from my mistakes. May not release episode 0 until I've completed at least 1 more.

Better Audio BUT No Audio Levels

My Rode VideoMic arrived a few days ago and was excited to unpack it out of the shipping box when I got back into my car. Bought batteries, got home and plugged it into my Canon 7D. Did some experiments, set on tripod and filmed myself talking, audio test. Now, I knew this was coming but apparently, you can't monitor the audio levels on a Canon 7D nor available headphone plug-ins in this model. On a Canon 5DMk2, latest firmware, it has those audio gain controls (AGC) and its quite helpful but if I'm not mistaken, it too does not have a headphone jack either.

However, I've managed to do a couple of takes by experimenting myself (distance-wise), from 1-5 meters away from the cam just to see the difference the audio can pickup. Results? It's really accurate and those people who highly recommended them were right! :) The Microphone is BRILLIANT! May need to do some more test though.

Tried it out on 'Laila + Ezam's wedding this week. So far, compared with the internal mics on 7D, its way much better, obviously. But there is some slight curiosity on a couple of things which I'm still experimenting. That is why its hard to know whether it sounds good or bad directly from camera until transferring it to the computer afterwards, not having any ways to listen OR monitor sound when recording.

Wreck (Canon 7D Experiment)

I've been shooting this short piece for 2 days. Weather conditions were horrible as it began to rain everytime I stepped outside on to the beach. Managed to compiled 2 days of work into a short film called 'Wreck'. I was inspired by a filmmakers who does this as an experiment with HD-DSLRs. Shot this with the Canon 7D using only a Sigma 24-70mm lens. Also applied some dolly shots which were pretty jerky. Didn't bothered to shoot again after failing twice.

I color graded this with the 3-way color-corrector from my FCP but only slightly. I'm aware that something is still off with it such as brightness/contrast. But again, couldn't be bothered, something else was on my mind.

The Story Behind 'The Last Walk' Short Film

Let me tell you readers a story about the day when I decided to shoot this short film. It was VERY recently. When? Lastnight! So while waiting for the about video to load, read below.

During the day, about 5:45pm, I've decided to join my wife and aunt to go to the Serasa Beach cos my aunt wanted to play around with my Canon 500D on a 50mm. I light-bulb popped. I wanted to try out my 7D but didn't know what I was planning to shoot. I thought about it on the way over and decided. Just plain ordinary continuous timelapse of the sunset over the sea. Picturing this lovely STILL, I also realized time was running short as the day began to shed darkness quickly due to the coming heavy rain as well. I've managed to capture at least 20mins of it and buggered-off home.

In between the stilled-tripod on top of a rock I was sitting, I pictured many things on the shore of the beach. Something that could be shot and compiled together into a short clip. I was aiming something random. Something Philip Bloom (a filmmaker) would do whenever he had a chance to visit a place whilst carrying his camera...for experiments. But I couldn't because I had the 7D on still awaiting for the sun to climb down from its positioning. I could use the 500D but that wasnt the case. I needed to try it out on the 7D which I'm still studying.

Anyways, nothing happened. Coming home, I quickly exported the files onto my Mac and worked on this shitful clip, speeded it up to see what I had accomplished. Apparently, it was alright but not just yet. It wasn't enough. PLUS, I had a full-stop on my 12mins of recording. During the time, I wasn't looking at my camera and lose at least 2minutes. Now...the first clip are not joined properly as it showed a jumpy stutter in the conjoining of the 2nd clip.

I said...'Right...I'm scrapping this off'. I'll just have to do it other time. WHEN i have the time. Because I was too busy with trying to catch up on wedding edits but was also too eager to try play around with my 7D.

So that evening, I wandered around. I wandered around the house whilst smoking. Thinking and thinking and suddenly, light-bulb turned on. I thought of a short film. A pretty simple one really. I realized I haven't been making any for the past few months after 'The Shape II'. I asked my brotha-in-law whether he would be interested in acting in it. He wasn't too keen about it but by forced, I got him!

I really really insisted that we shoot something that night due to the failure of my so-called timelapse. I know.

I decided to move from home about half-to-one (after midnight). Driving around looking for some nice places to shoot. Through out the night, we were also worried with the weather condition since it was raining heavily hours ago as well as the police surveillance patrol. We've managed to shoot everything quickly until we ended up at the 'Damuan Park' to finish the story-off.

FOR YOUR INFO (If You've watched it OR going to watch it)
It may look abit boring for all the quite, slow-cuts, long clips and feet-tapping climax. I am very much aware of that and it was not only done purposely BUT try to understand that this is how a person who will be having stressful-frustrating-problematic situation will feel if they are lonely. I'm trying to capture that few moments to wonder about this man. Otherwise, it won't be much of a filmmaking if you guys are anxious to jump to the point quickly. I know I have critics before from a friend of mine when I showed him my short film 'The Awakening' (which is not available on both Youtube and Vimeo, ONLY Facebook) but he was right...it was TOO long.

I'm gonna give credits to the actor who had tried his best although this was his first time. So guys...Enjoy my latest short film, 'The Last Walk'.

*Shot On Canon EOS 7D, using only Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. This is my first 1080p25 short film and honestly speaking, I'm no good with the manual-settings for night-scenes. I'm NOT really happy with the colors/white balance but I did color graded the clips with the 3-way color-corrector on FCP a little.

Finally...My Canon 7D

YES! Finally purchased my Canon EOS 7D. Well.... invested really. Managed to sold my Canon XL2 on Brudirect for this baby. Some may be wonder now, no...I'm not becoming a photographer (...as if I wanna be one), no, its used as a video-camera. Nowadays, this is the shit for properly good-looking video device. I've been using Canon 500D all these times for weddings and it does the job. Although, it was pretty hard at times when you need to change the lens every now and again.

My only concern at the time (in the shop) was to buy lens I needed. As I purchased the camera, I thought twice whether I should get the lens I've always wanted. A 24-70mm f2.8. I said, what the heck, sooner or later I do need one. So, I did. I know...a complete package along with battery-grips (not necessary) and some extra battery packs. I was also a little short but I HAD TO buy myself those Sandisk Compact Flash (CF) cards which bloody cost a fortune! I needed at least 16GBs to shoot an actual wedding event a day.

Would I think HD-DSLRs are convenient to use for weddings?

(Whilst becoming the lonesome videographer without a mate, meaning you alone).

Actually...yes it does and no it doesn't. It has both the pros and cons as well like any other matters. Well...I'm not trying to be smart but this is what I've experience in my line of work. I love HD-DSLRs. I think, my answer is probably the same as everybody else's...the lenses. You could use all kinds just to make the video extremely good. With all the DOFs, its wonderful.

Off course....there are the cons. You can't change lenses on time such as during the 'Nikah', (Imam + Groom + Bride / Rings). You may encounter overheating problems which most likely camera turns-off automatically on a 'Basuh Kaki' event during a 'Bersanding' on a hot weather. I know I did. All the time. Also, not keeping it up with low-lights IF you don't own at least a f1.8mm prime lenses whilst shooting an event such as 'Ambil-Ambilan OR Balik 3/7 Hari' during the evening.

These are the things I'm experiencing when I'm shooting alone with my DSLR. Not until lastnight, I had a second body which made it pretty quicker as you had one specific lens for each body. Not forgetting, my partner was also shooting on DSLR and it became even MORE fun and easy to use to operate with DSLRs during a wedding.

Though, I wouldn't say DSLR is BETTER than a proper high-end camcorders. It is still IMPORTANT to have one if you are calling yourself a videographer. I just don't have one at the moment because the one I'm aiming for costs 3 times the amount of my Canon 7D. PLUS, my MacPro needs to be upgraded good enough to handle the files. Perhaps one day when the time comes. Canon 7D will then become my 2nd camera. Shall not say what but its definitely a Professional camcorder. Don't be so cheeky.

Anyways, I haven't really got around in exploring with my Canon 7D cos got lots of edits to do BUT what I do realize during day 1 at the 'Balik 3 Hari' lastnight was... its easy to use after studying the manuals for like 5minutes. Colors were beautiful although we used custom settings which I copied from my Canon 500D. Yup. We don't use the original color settings. The first time Eyan told me, I didn't quite get it until he explained to me why and how i needed to see for myself after trying. Its good in post-production during color corrections WHICH I'm really into nowadays!

I love weddings very much and I've been doing this myself for over 3 years now and I've got tons of samples but nothing compared to ones in 2010 along with my second...third....fourth shooters who are has a creative and talented background individually, operating camera supports such as GlideCams, Sliders, 12ft Crane etc to be used in necessary moments during your weddings.

My style of work: The day we meet for booking confirmation (Coffee House OR Murtabak OR Teh Tarik ETC) is the day where I'm also your fellow friend. One who is willing to get to know you in order to create your wedding film with OUR magic touch. However, you should just keep up with me or my team no matter what because by the end of the day, its used in your video and yes, you shall see it. I sometimes make up silly directing, acting up trying to set-up a beautiful mood in those occasions such as spontaneous interviews with weird questions OR unusual shootings. Lots Of Weddings To Be Edited, First Pre-Wedding Abroad

This is one of those blog-posts where I’ll be laying down everything straight out, (no photos, too lazy to upload them).

My brother Asa Groves got married to our newest Groves member, Sophie. Did I shoot for their wedding? Yes I did. Shooting video for ONLY their Nikah function and ended up taking photos towards the end. Not that I’ll be editing their video anytime soon for you readers to see.

It’s been a hectic last couple of weeks. Catching up on my editing which needs to be done quickly. At this moment, I’m currently, ALMOST done with ‘Khartini + Asrul’ DVD. The highlighted version is looking pretty sharp as this will be one of the main video samples. Its amazing really. Will soon be uploaded along with another, ‘Nana + Hil’.

Also shot a wedding with Jason Ong of Masamichi. A client, both doctors, ‘Siti + Rizal’. The wedding was lovely. The bride was pretty. Enjoyed making their video. As always, can’t wait to edit their film.

July is a good month. Been keeping myself busy just shooting weddings week after week. This week, we shot a client named ‘Fini + Adel’ in Tutong. For some strange reasons, I personally think Tutong is hotter then the rest of the other districts. I don’t know, its heating up very differently during the day. The humidity is terrible and I tend to sweat ridiculously!

Another exciting news, will be shooting first pre-wedding film abroad in September for the first time. Where? Kuala Lumpur. And for some stupid reasons, right now, this minute, I forgot the names. Client’s husband is Malaysian and will be having their reception in KL next year, February.

Because I’m going to KL for an official ‘Directing Workshop’, I suggested whether they’ll be going to KL anytime soon. I told them I was going in September. One thing led to another, we agreed to have their pre-wedding shoot abroad in their package. Pretty awesome since I’ve always wanted to do this. But…I’ll be doing it alone, that’s my challenge. Will see what happens til the day comes. Thanks to Flo Von Linprun for introducing us.

Me As 2nd Shooter With Irwan Lois

Irwan Lois is also a well-known wedding videographer. Actually, he started doing weddings longer than I have. Good guy. Very laid back person. Called me up one day a few months back asking for me to become his 2nd shooter to shoot the groom's side. I accepted. Event took place last week, 25th and the 27th.

Irwan Lois with his Sony FX1. I was using my usual camera, Canon 500D and snapped a few photos during this 'Sanding' event. Figure I didn't have to shoot the same thing as Irwan did. Was also shooting with photographers such as 'Moments' and 'FloVonLinprun'.

For some reasons, I ended up taking photos towards the end. Was trying out the 135 L lens and really liked it. On video its abit difficult since you need to have it on a tripod so that you won't shake around that much. Pretty sensitive. But also, hard to maintain focus. They intend to easily de-focus when the object moves just a little. (You know what I mean). Basically, I was shooting stills with the lens. Not bad.

The wedding was alright. Had fun. But IF it was MY client, the bride will be my FIRST priority to shoot. :) In fact, I don't really know the names of these two. LOL. Tisk...tisk...tisk.... Congrats to the both of you.

It Bit Me In The Ass To Do It

On the 23rd June, just after midnight, probably around 1230am-1245am, I received a phone call from Melvin, a friend of The Grand Hall (Soundman-Operator) asking whether I was FREE to shoot a VERY LAST MINUTE event for the BSP VendorForum2010. Now...this is not normal. Obviously its impossible cos I needed to be there hours later at 7AM! Called up the boys and seemed like it was such a hassle and a complete mess for last-minute 2 angle-livefeed preparation. Decided not to bother them. So I called-up another friend, he insist it wasn't a good idea. I was interested, off course I was. A simple job with a good-pay. The guy kept calling me over and over for confirmation and i was stuck-dead thinking it through, should I OR should I not?

I answered.

I refused to do the job but the situation keeps biting me in the ass saying, 'Rezeki Jangan Di Tolak'. I was like.....'ERGHHH!'. I said, its impossible cos I'm the only one available. He said 1 camera operator is good enough, JUST shoot livefeed continuously for about 45minutes and DONE! You happy, I'm happy and the client's happy.

Guess what happened?

That following afternoon I rushed to the Mangrove Resort for another shoot for BIBD with MotionWorkz Production.

Eyan's DIY Rig

I've known Eyan over a year....i think AND the one thing I've realize about this man is, he enjoys making something into something. Such as his previous self-made dolly track using PVC pipes AS a track itself when we short a video for 'Easy Orange Advertising' for BKN. (No, we didn't take a picture). As well as his mini-dolly one we used the first time on our short horror experimental project 'The Shape II: Experimental Version'. (See link on sidebar to watch). Then there are other things such as rig.

In the photo above, his Canon 500D is customized into one of those DSLR fever going on today. Building it up to look like a monster-cam. I can't really explain everything but as you can see, all those metal bits on a plate IS indeed self-made. Attaching a 7" LCD monitor for better view and on its left side, a follow-focus and lens ring for operation yada-yada. See photo below.

I know right. However, I too will get into it someday. As today, its not equip with any gadget such as this. I've tried it during an event and follow-focus does help for those who are having difficulty focusing on video-mode. But the only thing I think will save up the hassle in changing lens is to use a fix zoom-lens for events. Cos you won't be having enough time to change it. You could but you'll end up making a mess. Hahaha. That's why Eyan also bought his first 24-70 f2.8 L lens which does the job perfectly. I admire this person. I wonder if he admires me...??? For posting about him off course hahaha. :)

Crane @ Wedding Event

From my previous post, I mentioned a crane but didn’t have any photos. Above, is prove! The wedding we used the 12ft crane was ‘Raymond + Liza’ who was wedded on the 17th June 2weeks ago. The first event took place at the ‘Indera Kayangan Ballroom’ @ The Empire Hotel. We arrived an hour earlier before make-up artist started just so we could arrange the crane in its position for both bride and groom’s entrance.

It seems like there were so much to take care of during the time since my partner was covering the groom’s side @ Desari Apartment in Jalan Kumbang Pasang. Also had to plug in the Zoom H4N audio recorder in the control room for audio recording. Its not like I couldn’t do it myself, it was ME panicking about the 12ft crane set-up in the ACTUAL wedding and to make sure the man who was behind it knew exactly what he was suppose to do on my directions.

Seriously, the crane took people’s attention. They might be saying ‘Well….that’s new..’ OR ‘What the hell is that???’ OR ‘Bloody hell these kids are annoying’.

The Crane. As I said before, the camera-support device needs at least 3 people to carry into position and 1 person who knows how to use it. Obviously, a person who knows how to put an in-frame into an out-frame. We used the JVC camcorder on the crane but remembering the last time we used it during a pre-wedding for the first time, I liked the DSLR better in terms of wide lens which Eyan used, Sigma 11-16. It looked completely rad from an aerial view. However JVC has its thing going on as well, when not in used with high-angle shots, you could always walk to the front and operate the camera such as zoom in and outs and work the crane like a jib-arm.

We practically used the Crane in 3 of 4 events and seriously, it was pretty much challenging. On the last event, (Reception), we had trouble placing the crane’s whereabouts because the Grand Hall Ballroom was packed and we ended up setting the crane on the far-end-right-side of the hall which was workable. Our first plan didn’t work. Will post up the end product once finished editing.

NotFamous Strikes Back....Again

13th June, Sunday, me and my band, performed and entertain families, friends and fans at the Mini-Amp Jerudong Park and ended with a boom. Months after the last show in December, we've in hiding behind the shadows recording our new/latest songs for the upcoming album 2010. The show was absolutely great and we enjoyed every bit of it. Performing the 5 new songs as well as an oldie for closing entitled 'Second Song' (first album). From what I could say, the audience loved us and supported us all the way with a sing-a-long on a very recent piece called 'This Summer', written by Asa and myself the night before the show. (Title may change).

However, the stage was slippery and the sound from the monitors were terrible. Many complained about not hearing our voices singing whilst it was loud and sharp from on the stage itself. There were lots of crap too. Crap. This was also the first show in Bandar and I was using my new guitar which my dad bought for me during my visit to Philippines 2009. I must say, the guitar is fantastic. Although I was abit upset due to the fact that I fell into this hold right after exiting to backstage. Why? Because some idiot did not handled the stage as they were suppose to which led to a crack at the bottom of my guitar. Yes, a bloody crack and now it looks horrible everytime I whip it out. The first time out and the first time banged across the floor. Bruce my legs and knees.

I'm proud to say that my brother 'Asa' did a job well done since day 1 of jamming. All went well. He talked alot as well as forgot lyrics but managed to entertain the crowd to sing along. He complained afterwards about not hearing the bass sound coming from his monitor speakers. From the picture above you could also see his lyrics by his microphone stand.

Paul however, performed a 20 minute drum solo the day before featuring song other singers such as MicBandits. He also played with a few minus one selections. On the show itself, Paul did his very best to entertain the crowds as well from doing hardcore beats which even made me abit difficult to count in one of the songs, 'Climbing Ladders'.

The set-list during the show accordingly was 'B Positive', 'Trauma', 'Another Untold Story', 'Climbing Ladders', 'This Summer' and 'Second Song'.

Importance, Thoughts + Values Of Wedding Videos

It’s been said that a picture speaks a thousand words. It captures the moment in time that’s very important to you. I guess that’s why brides and grooms are willing to pay thousands of dollars for their wedding days. But I wonder why when it comes to videos, some couples might not even consider or bother to get videos for their wedding day?

You might wonder why I’m bringing this topic up? Well, last week, I was reading up on my facebook wall when I came across someone who’s looking for wedding photography services. So I sent an inbox message to that person offering our wedding videography services. The person responded that they’re considering photography only but will discuss it with the significant other about the video. So I replied to her:

Yes, we only offer video. Talk to him and get back to me whether it’s a yes or no.
But may I just say that sayang if nada video on your wedding day. True you can see and look back to pictures, but that’s only a fraction of a second in time, whereas for videos, you get to see and relive those memorable moments over and over again, with voices, words, laughters and tears that only happen during your wedding day.

That’s how I personally feel about it. Yes, you can see your glorious photo album over the years and reminisce those moments in your head and imagination. But that’s it. With videos, you get to see, hear and relive the moments. Would you rather see 1/60th of second “moment” or a 10-15 seconds of the same “moment”? Would you rather see 1/60th second of your smile and laughter or see a 10-20 seconds worth of smiles and laughters during your wedding? Would you want to see, say around 30-50 guests on your photos, or 100 or more faces of guests on videos?

It’s interesting to see what people think on this. What importance do you give to video as oppose to photos for your wedding day? How do you value the videos over photos? Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against photographers and photos. In fact, I love photography as much as videography. It’s just interesting to me to see and hear what people’s thoughts are on these. So please do share.

First Pre-Wedding Film Using 12ft Crane!

Yesterday, Visual Dimensions team went to Jerudong Park to shoot a pre-wedding film. Client's wedding will be in July. This is day 1. Yes...Visual Dimensions does not shoot pre-wedding films in one day. We will shoot the film until we are satisfied with the end product during post-production. Inserting elements and last minute ideas. It was an enjoying afternoon as we ended up til night.

What's even more exciting is, this is the first day/time we are using the new CRANE! Yes, 12ft long crane making the video even more spicier and unique since this is the first to be used in weddings. The only problem is, its gonna be really difficult to use in an actual weddings but we'll take our chances. :) We only intend to use this mostly in hall events. And...to carry the thing, we need at least 2-3 people. The yuckiest thing is that, WE FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE OF IT!

There's lots more work to be done cos me and Eyan have a few more things to throw into this video. I actually wanted to do an underwater shoot since NOW, we CAN! But the client, (the Bride) didn't want that. But that's okay, instead, Eyan offered something which is probably better. Can't wait for the next shoot.

If you are wondering, the shoot yesterday also includes a spontaneous interview session. Above is the groom. Eyan operated the cams whilst I ask the questions. Spontaneously! Gonna be tricky but the plan is all there on the table. JVC shot Full whilst Canon 500D MCU (Medium Close-Up). I'm beginning to love Eyan's JVC camera as I'm also willing to get one myself some day. Just realize that its not always fascinating using DSLRs. We always need to stand-by a proper camcorder as well for advantages. You work it out.

Not Famous Rocks Families Big Day Out

I will be performing with my band 'NotFamous' on the 13th June next coming Sunday. This shall be the first show this year since our last in December. Very excited, the band is working these last couple of weeks improving the newest songs for the upcoming 2nd album.

I've just finished writing lyrics for what I think is a fun song to play and its something that most people can relate to. It's entitled 'Trauma', check it out. Don't miss the show. Everytime NotFamous perform, there's always a surprise!

K69 Strikes Back

Introducing, 'Kumpulan 69', our very own local comedians. These potential guys can make you crap your pants whenever you're encountering them in a show. Left: Beracun & Right: Pache. The she-male and the Haji both started acting in shows *if I'm not mistaken, 2007. I first saw their performance when i was shooting DST's Go! Broadband launch. Eversince, the duo had had good feedback from audiences all around, they've been called up for many events for performance as well as guest MCs. They've also performed for the Royal family one had said.

Beracun and Pache would always get their way when seeing me in an event. A complete humiliation from them which I'm kinda used to BUT no, I dont like it one bit. In fact, I'm not that all upset because I personally know the man behind the disguise. A nice friendly person who in real-life is generally funny.

I was hired by Ritma Picturesque Production for camera operater in an event called 'Perlawan Persahabatan Futsal Antara Artis Brunei Dan Artis Malaysia' last month at the Indoor Stadium. Not knowing what it was really about, I accepted the job. Apparently, K69 were the captain of the team along with DJ Daffy, DJ Zamri, DJ Diddy, Yura, Alilah and Adi (A Band Once) to take on Malaysian's Raja Lawak, Johan, Zizan, Nabil, Angah as well as Danny, Fiz Firdaus and Kamal.

The Futsal game was an absolute joke! People laughing their asses off as the 2 teams competed with stupidities. In fact, I was also astounded by the act. I was operating on floor camera whilst the camera operator from top. As of today, the footages are edited into a proper DVD film which shall be launched this upcoming Friday, 28th May. K69 shall be doing another performance. Venue: Giant Mall, Rimba, 1530hrs.

TelBru's Gala Night Event

Last Saturday, Visual Dimensions took the next step in working with multicam shooting + livefeed. I tell you now, its not as easy as it sounds but we've managed. Thank god! The team is building up slowly, we've got some new trainees. We've got lots of cameras and we ended up making the best of it in so many angles. Cameras used during that night were: Our new JVC HM100, the Sony FX1 as well as my Canon XL2. We also used 3 DSLRS, 2X Canon 500Ds and a Canon 5D MkII.

Eyan & Saiful setting up the Sony FX1 as a center cam. Saiful was incharge with this position and i must say, a job well-done for him as we were viewing his handling with livefeed from the projector shown.

Our station during the event. Managed to get a table as we used one of the boys to transfer memory cards onto a laptop as backup.

Zati, our female videographer operated the Canon XL2 (livefeed) as well as Canon 500D. But off course she was not doing both at once. A job well done for this lady.

Eyan, my partner. He was the operation's manager for set-up and formation. Congrats in making this operation happen according to plan. Eyan operated, JVC HM100 and the Glidecam 4000 Pro with the Canon 500D when JVC was on static.

Myself and the twins. Don't remember their names. HAHAHA. One operated the livefeed camera (switched with Zati) and one was runner. Runner boy was also incharged with recording the stage audio using the Zoom H4N connected into the main source mixer/sound control room. I however, operated the Canon 5D MkII. Its an awesome camera, the colors are pretty but the file sizes once transferring to computer is sloooow....! It took me almost half and hour to upload an 8GB memory card onto my Mac. I used 3 8GB during the event.

K69 performed that night and decided to go back stage for a photo. Apparently, I was interviewed by the duo regarding my role in this event. The camera-man was not our people.

Hectic Experience & A Project With Shah P2F

What's up what's up what's up....! Haven't been updating much these past few weeks. Been rather busy with everything! Plus, I haven't been up on a proper computer to use the internet but have been in total obsessed with my i-Phone! Yup...managed to get one of those baby's once and for all. Apparently, not brand new but it was kinda a gift for my hardwork. Thanks to the man!

Other than that, I'm not doing much editing work on weddings and i know i should but, a man's gotta eat right? I took a last minute job from a production company, editing a number of episodes for P2F diary for RTB. Just for experience. I did. And its not a pretty picture.

I've edited 2 episodes only, EP7 and EP8. Then i was called in for another editing job from ANOTHER production company, Motionworkz. I was in stress mode during the period. As much as I wanted to continue the remaining episodes for P2F, I just couldn't deal with the fact that I was overworked, over-pressured for deadlines. It's unbelievable. Same-day-edit once footages are brought back to the office. I've been constantly working my ass-off and also being canned from behind for so many reasons I've not expected. But yea, its a job and i wanted it. But not in a way where I'm getting blame for other people's mistake. I shall not say no more, cos they are indeed reading this. (Sorry Guys). But in the other hand, I too have another deadline with Motionworkz..AND I'm lacking out on my wedding videos which I'm doing in between times. Not enough sleep, very tired and feeling a bit lazy at some points. I have to do it whether i like it or not.

As much as I don't wanna sound too egoistic, I am my own boss and I do what I do according my way. Off course I can take orders, I respect that but not in a way where you're being back-talked just because I'm giving suggestions. That my friend is not professional but a typical 'Orang Melayu'.

Next subject, from both episodes of P2F, I'm officially a supporter to the program. Some say, its stupid and ridiculous and P2F sucks donkey ass but in the other hand, some loves it TOO much. I just don't see the point where some people are crying their asses off for ones elimination. LMAO. However, I've become a fan to one particular participant, and that is 'Shah'. The kid has talent and I've been watching him from rehearsal to performance to elimination. (No i did not cry, sad yes, but not a tear).

Instead, I contacted him through Facebook and offered to meet up just so I could offer him a music video. Its not easy getting free music video from me. Some couldn't even pay the price. I wanted to try out something different. Shah is an excellent dancer and his choreography is outstanding. I wanted to try something with dancing for a change. Its all about developing something different. I've done 2 music videos which involves band/instruments and now its time to try out solo singers and their dancers.

I took Shah out for dinner a couple nights ago and laid out all the ideas and concepts. A proposal. He was indeed interested but apparently we'd have to start later due to several stuffs. I need to get back to work whilst he has personal things to do as well. In any ways, I'm excited with the film I'm writing to include in his music video. I'm also composing the music with him. This project should be a nice experiment and challenge.

Overall, Shah is a wonderful person and apparently one of the top P2F most favorite singers but unfortunately he was eliminated? His best performance that took viewers amazement was when he sung 'Sorry Sorry' by Super Junior, a Korean song. The theme during episode 7 was 'International' music. I don't know what you call it. The dance steps were great! Here's the video below which he performed during that night.

The video is great. I don't know about you but I'm hoping me and the team can develop something
way better with the touch of Visual Dimensions's creativity. In fact, we'll be including some new
gadgets which Eyan had bought few days ago. It's crazy!

So basically, that's what I've been up to. Experience with RTB, getting into P2F, becoming a
fan of Shah, catching up on weddings and preparing for the next adventure in a few weeks time,
days and months ahead.

BIBD Wish Campaign

Last Friday, Motionworkz Production as well as Pictureworkz Studios attended the Final BIBD Wish Campaign Million (I dont think Im saying it right but whatever). The camera I operated during the time was the Panasonic HVX300, I'm sure you've seen my oldest post, its like a BETA cam. On tripod, on a platform by the right wing of the Rizqun International Hotel BallRoom whilst David Cheok handled the same camera on the left wing. The Sony EX1 was also used and was operated by Irwan Lois. I dont really know why I'm talking about cameras and camera-men cos I seriously have no idea what I want to type in this post.

All I can say, it was great fun. I dont really remember the name of that winner but 'SHE' also won the 100,000 a few months back. Lucky woman.

My Little Sister 'Nicolle'

A short video clip created for my little sister, Nicolle Groves during my visit to the Philippines February 2010 whom I just found out I had since last September. Always wanted a sister, now I do. I really like this video. It's probably one of my bestest so far.

Yes, real sister, by blood.

The music was officially composed by myself for her. The name of the song is called 'Nikoru'. In the beginning of the video, I wanted it to sound emotionally dramatic, so I used a keyboard holding down just one note (low) and filled it up with higher ones. As for guitar, it was looped over and over until the end. Drums and bass were digital (from software).

Previously 2-months-post-back, I mentioned that I'll be taking the GlideCam 2000 Pro with me. In the video, you will notice some glides which were done terribly bad and to hide it, the footages are shorter. Really need to do more practice with it.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the moments spent with my sister making this short video. It also means alot to me for having a sister who is talented as well as smart and funny living in the Philippines with my biological father. This is my sister, 'Nicolle Groves'.

Also, this is the LAST wedding video/client to be shot in Standard Definition (SD) and edited into partitions (sequences). A mixture of footages from 3 different cameras, the Canon XL2 (glidecam), Panasonic DVX (static) & Canon 500D (detailed). After this, the team will be using same cameras with multiple angles. Can't wait for our upcoming wedding events.

Another TV-Series Obsession

Yes, the title explains it all. ANOTHER tv-series obsession I’ve been watching for the past couple of weeks. After the finale of fourth season ‘Dexter’, I’ve decided to start a new season of dramas. I was told that ‘Prison Break’ is another program I would enjoy watching. Clearly, I did and I’ve bought all seasons. After lastnight, I realized that Season 4 IS the finale. There is no season 5 for this after doing research on net.

Prison Break, is one of those addicted dramas I love personally. Something I could relate to in terms of life. The story is motivating and intense. It’s about 2 brothers; (Lincoln Burrows) one sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit and the other (Michael Scofield) is one with the brains to try save his brother’s life by breaking him out of prison. Creative, Scofield tattooed his entire torso with blueprints of the Fox Rivers State Penitentiary (without anyone elses suspicion) and purposely causes trouble in robbing a bank just so he could get locked up.

Season 1 is probably one of the best seasons of the whole lot. I’m sure other fans agree. It’s original and oh how I wish I could make a drama like that! So, if you have not watch Prison Break, I highly recommend you to start. You won’t regret it. My only problem now is, I’m out of dramas to watch. What else should I go for…?

Another Wedding After Another

Yes, shooting another client this coming weekend. However, this is the 2nd time I shot a 'Badak Mandi' event which is pretty much similar with 'Berbedak'. Only close families and friends. The event was yesterday (Wednesday) and 3pm. Quite unusual schedule. I shot this event alone along with my fellow photographer, Flo (Always loved working in events with him. I highly recommend you to shoot for your weddings). I think this one is going to be another blast cos the bride and her 2 close friends were super. Should be fun and interesting to see the storyline being build after each event to the finale.

The picture above is me using a Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L-series lens. My oh my....I must have this lens. Its so compatible for doing instant zoom-in shots without losing its values with a fix f2.8 aperture. Awesome. However the lens is indeed heavy and really, it looks hardcore with the lens hood.

First Wedding Shoot At Grand Hall

Shooting an event at the Grand Hall Empire Hotel was absolutely a remarkable most exquisite coverage we’ve ever did. The environmental is fantastic for a wedding + photoshoots. There were so many ideas you can actually do there. We however ended up making this particular coverage an excellent result. I can feel it. And I can’t wait to edit this video!

The bride, ‘Khartini’ was so cool in wanting to act in some of the shoot. I personally ended up having the best time compared with some of the previous weddings. The place was enormously huge. Thank god, I had an advance shoot-out the day before to cover the exterior of the building during the day time following with rehearsal which shoot be good to include in the video as preparations as well. (The event was at night).

Operating 3 cameras with our usual routine angles during the bride + groom walk into the hall. I was totally astounded by the fact that it was well-organized. Not like those typical rush and arguments with floor managers, wedding planners etc. I may be wrong but I haven’t seen any errors like I usually do. (You know, like when covering a wedding and see those stressed out-over-worked parents/siblings and others who are involved with program arrangements etc. I see a lot of that but who am I to say, weddings ARE always like that). But in this case, this was nicely done. People are friendly and supporting. This client is now in my top 3 favorite to work with.

As I said, I can’t wait to get to work on editing with this one. Sadly, I’ve got a couple more to edit until I get to it. At the moment, I’m pretty slow due to the fact that my MacPro is cranking up once again on low memory. Need to get this sort out next week as they’ve out of stock.

The New TV-Series Obsession

Yes...my title says it all. Its called 'Dexter'. I thought I might get into a new tv-series whilst waiting for my other interest with dramas such as and first of all, 'Desperate Housewives', followed by 'Ghost Whisperer', '90210', 'Family Guy' and 'Friends' (although this has been ended, it's nice to watch it from time to time). A friend of mine from the DVD store recommended and i mean, HIGHLY recommended me to start watching this. Not just so she sells me a DVD but she has always been quite a supporting salesgirl and understands my taste in films.

At first, I underestimated it judging from the old-faded cover. I have no idea what 'Dexter' was really about but she did mention that, 'You WILL like and its about killing' at least a dozen time. (Yea right...even IF I'm also obsessed with suspense-horror-thriller films, doesn't mean I can guarantee I will definitely like it.) To shut her up, I bought the damn disc and watched it the following night. From the first 10-15minutes of the 1st episode of season 1, I knew I wanted to see more. Blogging about this, I've just finished the entire Season 1 for 4 straight days, after work. (Editing wedding videos if you wonder). Enjoyed every single episode.

Apple ProRes 422

Ever since I’ve started editing with HD on FCP, my system is obviously getting slower due to the fact that the files are pretty much heavier than SD. My FCP would act up ridiculously in so many irritating ways such as ‘sudden shut-down without saving (relaunch)’, ‘Lagging during laybacks after rendering’ as well as annoying pop-up warnings saying: ‘close open sequences, lowering audio data rates, turn-off RT, upgrading hard drives/ram’ etc. At first I thought I was running out of disc space (which I am) and so I bought an internal 1TB hard-drive. Problem solved for a while but not quite yet. It started again and this time worst. It must be the ram I wondered. I was planning to get one after my next pay so I asked a friend whois a Mac-user for solutions during the wait.

He recommended to convert all files to Apple ProRes 422 which should help to avoid the jerkiness during playbacks on my timeline sequence. It did help, a lot. Nevertheless, files were bigger than before (originally) but it made my editing easier once again although I should still upgrade my ram soon. Thank god I bought the new hard-disc. Below I’ve summaries details about Apple ProRes, copied from site.

Apple ProRes 422 codec vs. Uncompressed HD

Apple ProRes codec lets you edit faster and at higher quality across a wide variety of workflows. The family now includes ProRes 422 (Proxy), ProRes 422 (LT) and ProRes 4444, in addition to the original ProRes 422 and ProRes 422 (HQ).

Choose ProRes 422 (Proxy) for offline editing or use ProRes 422 (LT) for projects that require reduced file sizes at broadcast quality, such as news, sports, and events. At the other end of the scale, ProRes 4444 is ideal for compositing and digital workflows that require the highest-possible image fidelity.

ProRes 422 is a full-raster codec, meaning the video is not scaled down. The full 1920x1080 image is used, unlike DVCPRO-HD or XDCAM, which scale HD 1080 video down to 1280x1080 and 1440x1080 respectively, effectively tossing out a large amount of picture data to save space.

There are other HD codecs with lower data rates available, but because they are more highly compressed, they take more processing power to encode and decode (play back). The ProRes 422 codec provides a good middle-ground by providing a smaller file size than uncompressed, while providing easy capture and playback on even marginal machines.

Another important benefit of ProRes 422 is that it allows more layers of Dynamic RT playback. 4 layers of 1080i can be expected, and 720p 24 editors can expect up to 14 layers of HQ footage playback in real time. For reference, a powerful 8-core machine with a video RAID might only play a single stream of uncompressed HD.

One last tip – while the ProRes HQ codec is great for video from high-end sources, it may be overkill for formats like HDV. It’s been reported that users are better off to use the standard ProRes 422 codec at 145Mbps with the lower-end HD formats, as there is no advantage to using the HQ codec when starting with a highly-compressed and scaled HD source format.

American Memorial Cemetery, Manila

As I've mentioned before, this is the other video I did during my stay in Manila. Also shot with my Canon 500D using most of the time the 18-55mm kit lens. I also mentioned that during my stay, everything was pretty much a rush and I couldn't hardly do anymore scenes which I really wanted to. So, this is pretty much it.

This is one of the largest American cemeteries in the world where 17,202 American soldiers died serving the Philippines during the second world war against the Spanish. It's a fascinating tourist destination for visit whilst in Philippines as it's located somewhere in the middle of the city of Manila itself. Now, I'm not going to explain everything, just watch the video and see.

It could have been better but 2 things bugged me. 1- There were not enough clouds and it was shot during the midday, very hot, killing off everything else in sight as well as getting sunburns and 2 - I was concern with my wife's conditions on her early stages of pregnancy and she was already giving me signals all over the place to leave in the first 20minutes. That also goes with my step-mom, I didn't really want her to get bored waiting for me because my intentions were doing simple time-lapse for at least 5-7minutes of continuous recording.

I'm not really in a rush for it anyways. My Canon 500D is doing a pretty awesome job for work and I'm quite happy with it. But anyhow, we're planning to get some more supporting gears for now instead. Basically, this one can wait.

First Client For Wedding Film

One of my favorite clients ‘Shah & Liyana’ who just got married in early January decided to come back and do their post-wedding film. So, we discussed it over the phone and plan to meet up earlier on this evening for a pre-production session with the couple. Now when I say film, it’s an actual film. A 10-15 minutes duration short film which shall be told in a story like never-before seen presented in cinematic style.

Produced by myself and Eyan, we will try our very best to make something extraordinary special for newlyweds as a remembrance on how they’ve found eachother. We’ll take them back to the very beginning. As for Shah & Liyana, we’re going back to school in uniforms and classrooms as this was also mentioned during the pre-production. Involving their friends and families who took part in the actual life, things are about to get tempting.

Eyan recorded the discussion earlier on using his ‘Zoom H4N audio recorder’ in order to develop the storyboards in a timeline sequence. I will be writing the scripts along with Eyan’s assistance. I may not be good in Malay-type dialogue but I sure as hell can make it wholly remarkable. That’s off course I may not be able to add any of my murder scenes like I normally do in my muted-horror films. :P We’re looking to do this as a new product developed by Visual Dimensions Production. It’s also a new way to present a pre/post wedding film as I’m so bored of making them music video style.

My intentions for this was also because, I’ve never tried romance flicks aside from horror and comedy such as ‘The Jo & Jul Show’. Consider this one of the first steps in filmmaking.

Eyan and I sat down a few months ago about this idea but it was difficult to proceed since many of the locals aren’t too eager to work in acting and to share their personal stories. Shah & Liyana were nice enough to give it a try. It’s not like its gonna be aired on TV or anything, it’s a piece to keep. Very much appreciated.

I’m giving myself 1 and a half weeks tops to finish the scripts and for them to check for errors etc before proceeding for production which involves cast and crews as well as locations and clothing. Once everything is completed and organized, we shall prepare the equipments and schedule the activity by locations as I’ve experience this from a 13-episode local drama I did with a production house in 08’. It is indeed the quickest way to do without wasting time.

I’m pretty much excited about all of this. Not only I will be directing/editing it but I have the power to also compose an ‘original soundtrack’ just for the newlyweds with my music background in recording and development. I’ve always wanted to try that. Although depending on the theme/style we're creating it, there will be partially composed by scenes such as happy, sad or angry. In any case, I'm willing to take the challenge as a music composer.

Oh my...I hope I'm not bragging too much. :P There's no 'i' in team but 'we'. I'm gonna have to pass credits to my buddy Eyan for keeping up with me. Hahaha. He has helped so much in all of this. Thanks. I know you reading this!!!

Caleruega Church, Manila

Here's my first simple short clip I did during my visit in Manila February 2010. Shot with my Canon 500D, 720p. This was suppose to be up on site a while ago but there seemed to be problems with the internet lately. From what I heard from Twitter, many are having trouble. Anyhow, will be uploading another one soon once I have the time.

The video above doesn't really represent anything personal but just trying out digital zooms edited on my FCP which was thought to me by Eyan (partner). As much as I wanted to have more angles to play with, the only problem during the time was the grumpy old dad. Can't really shoot with all the complaints. Haha. But to my curiosity, there weren't that much clouds and I was hoping to catch some for timelapse which shall look pretty good.

P/s: This is also my first HD short flick shot on my Canon 500D....aside from weddings off course. :)

Taking This Back For A Ride

This is my Kymco Quannon 125. I've always liked bikes and so I purchased mine in August 2008. My first choices were actually the Yamaha R6 and the Kawasaki Ninja 6R but there were too damn expensive. We're talking about 18-22k. Everytime I have this intention to buy, I would say to myself, "Naahh.... I better off be getting myself a bigger/better car OR yet, a new camcorder + other filmmaking equipments". So, I decided to purchase a rather CHEAP one. Better than nothing. This one cost 5k.

It's pretty much obvious that bikes are just for pleasure. Riding bikes are indeed exciting but dangerously risky if you make one slight mistake on the road. You may be careful but others may not. Anyways, the reason I'm blogging about this non-related subject is that, I'm frequently riding my bike again since I found out a few of my friends were also getting in to it.

After just a few days from picking up my bike from the Yamaha showroom in Beribi, I decided to make a short video clip. I had a brother-in-law to pick up my Panasonic DVX camera and film me riding my yellow-sabertooth-power ranger-125-2-wheeler on the Muara highway.This video was shot back in 2008.

Songket Wedding Showcase + Newest Member

Visual Dimensions team will be attending the ‘Songket Wedding Showcase 2010’ today which will be held at the Hua Ho Mall Manggis. Most likely, we’ll be filming the event entirely following by our newest member of our team, Zati. Yes,a girl and perhaps one of the first female wedding videographers I know to date. For some reasons, me and Eyan thought it would be best to have a female inside the team where it would be helpful in several ways. So, today she’ll be joining us for the first time.

I also like the fact that she knows alot about cameras. Not only shooting but using manual control settings such as exposures, iris and white-balance. Very impressive. I've seen female photographers before in previous wedding events but never have I once seen one who handles videography. Even better, she knows what to do! LOL

Chucky's Back

I knew there was going to be a remake of one of my favorite fictional horror slahser, ‘Chucky’. Been checking out news about it and apparently, they’ve started production last month and shall be released in 2011. Here we go again. Another long wait, just like I did with ‘Halloween’, ‘Friday The 13^th’ and the upcoming ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ which shall be in cinemas next month, April. Got a friend who works at The Mall and he showed me the listings.

The good news is, ‘Brad Dourif’ voice of Chucky will still have his role in the remake version. Unfortunately, the directors aren’t going to make that silly-comedy-crap like ‘The Seed Of Chucky’ where they included that stupid-looking British accent, Japanese he/she daughter/son character who wouldn’t even hurt a fly spoiler. It’s going to be really horrifying as we speak.

It’s how it should be anyways.

‘The Bride Of Chucky’ sequel was alright in my opinion but I knew for certain that there would be a continuation after. But I didn’t expect it to all messed-up and shit. Instead of pulling your blanky to cover your face when a death scene’s coming, you’ll see an outrageous most ridiculous scene to be included such as masturbating with dirty switsuit magazines. WTF… a murder-doll? Wanking? Try to remember how frightening Chucky was when you watched the first one from the 80s. It doesn’t go.

Okay, nuff’ yappin’ from me. That’s the end of my post.

DST Launches New Counter

Friday, March 5^th 2010 (Obviously), DST launches a new counter in Tanjung Bunut. This is our first HD-DSLR corporate video and I wanted it to look as good as it gets. So I brought along another companion to shoot on fix lens by using the only 18-55mm kit lens (static) where it was easier to have accessible zoom-in points for instant shots.

However, I was shooting with my prime lens such as 50mm and 30mm. I also borrowed a 11-16mm for wide. (I’m beginning to love this lens). After the job, we ended up doing time-lapse for abit but didn’t really worked out as planned since my target was not able to be found. I went home to see the videos and was astounded by the fact that it looked incredibly good! Probably one of the best corporate videos we have so far since we’ve started HD-DSLRs.

Meeting The Man Of The Hour

I must say, the man with me in the above picture is thee ‘Jason Magbanua’, one of Philippines most talented wedding filmmakers I’ve known over the years on net. I finally got a chance to meet up with this charming fellow for the first time on my last day visit in Manila. I thought I was going to get stood-up. Apparently, he was doing a somewhat wedding in Boracay says on his Twitter as I’ve been checking to see whether he was back.

I seriously thought I might come back to Brunei without meeting him. And, with all his effort, coming back from another wedding that same night, he offered to meet up. I was quite impressed and happy with that. Some people will not even have the potency to do anything whatsoever after a long day’s of work. He did.

We met up at this place called ‘Agave’, for drinks located somewhere in ‘High Street’. This is one of my definite favorite destinations for hang-outs. Left the house early with my step-sister, Kristine for dinner whilst killing time. Managed to do a little shopping at the very last minute. (It appears that I’ve found a new compilation habit aside from DVDs. Will let you in on that in my other posts).

Basically, I had a really fun time chatting with Jason even though there were some awkward silences and a lack of topics. So, I just asked about stuffs such as shooting/editing weddings and really, he was nice enough to share some of his knowledge. Although there were times I totally missed out. Words weren’t coming out of my mouth suitably. Felt like an idiot at some point. Other than that, he was an energetic and hyper person. It was cool.

Calle Ruega Church

On my second time visit to Manila, I realized that this time, I had more places to go and to see whilst my step-mother would give me and my wife a tour around. One of the things I like when coming into another country was history. I’ve always found myself fascinated by art, culture and architectures. However, I took the advantage to try and film as much as I can along with taking nice pictures. (Not that I DO take nice pictures, I just snap whatever I see).

One of the things we’ve seen a lot is the churches. Old historical churches with a nice a tale to go with. Some are even about the second world war. I shot a few for archives and to be edited into a short mini showreel. Well, that is also one of my main intentions from the start. Now, I know we live in a Muslim country but that doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to visit or walk into a church wanting to learn about other religions. So, anybody have a problem with me doing this, you can go f**k yourselves. You don’t own me. :)

When I was working as a tour-guide for 2years, I’ve never liked history. But when I got to understand it clearer, it became even more motivating. That’s how I’ve managed to love the whole idea about visiting another country and Manila really is a wonderful place to travel. I’ve not seen everything yet, but one day I will because now there’s a reason to be flying there anytime. Family.

In the third photo on your left is another fascinating Church which we were able to walk in to see some very antique pieces. It took us an hour and a half to finish the entire building. Speaking about this place here, this is another destination called 'Villa Escudero'. Some unusual things you may have or may not seen. Will post pictures of it soon.

By the way, that's my younger sister Nicolle Groves. She's such a sweetheart. She's also in one of my upcoming video projects. Managed to convince her to act/pose in them just as long as I do a photoshoot of her. Did so much. ALSO, something I will yet to be posting.

Anyways, I’ve filmed one of the churches called ‘Calle Ruega’ and will be posting it sometime soon. For you Adam Groves’s followers, you are actually expecting 3 videos from me and I’ve just finished the first, entitled ‘American Memorial Cemetery’, a short clip showing the grave stones of 17,202 American soldiers killed in World War II serving Philippines. One of the largest American cemeteries in the world today.

Glidecam 2000 Pro

Yup, packed this baby up inside me suitcase. I had to do some test trails with the expert earlier on today. Remember when I mentioned that GC isn’t easy to use and it takes lots of practice? Well, I forgot to mention one more thing about it. It takes a damn while to master the adjustments. Meaning, sorting out the right measurements to stabilize the camera on to a GC itself. It involves a lot of twist, slides and turns and sometimes, aligning the weights at the bottom of the GC. Whilst observing Eyan previously during the day, I tried doing it myself after I got home. It took me 30-45minutes to set it up correctly. I almost gave-up and decided not to take t with me for the trip but seems like, eventhough it finally took place, I find it rather appealing and began to think. I said ‘F**k it, I’m taking this with me’.

Eventually, I got it right and took it outside for a test run using my 18-55mm f3.5 kit lens to see how I would handle this mini-GC (Yup. I did say MINI. Because the one we used for weddings was the big brother, the GC 4000 Pro). Unfortunately, I didn’t do that well after playing back the short footages I took outside my garage. It was slightly off but manageable. Darkness fall, I tried using my 30mm f1.4 lens for better light. Apparently, if the lens is heavier, it means you need to re-adjust the GC’s once again which led me (even better this time), a 20minutes set-up. Did another test and was gawkily satisfied.

Found this on FB. A photo taken a couple days ago before shooting the BIBD Wish Campaign Nominees at the Rizqun International Hotel, The Mall with Motionworkz Production. The camera I'm holding is a Panasonic HVX model...something...something...using P2 memory cards. I'm not really a big fan with this camera for only 1 reason and for 1 reason only. The LCD on this device is very poor.

Doesn't It Feel Good When You Have Nothing More To Think About?

The title for this post says it all! I’ve finally completed my last wedding video before shooting off to paradise, my vacation! We had non-stop weddings since early November and now, this is inactive moment for me! Suffocating myself with coffee day in and day out is not healthy at all. The last thing I want is to get sick. However, the best thing about everything is that, you’re done with work and now, bring on the next one.

But seriously…I do have one more client to edit but that doesn’t count. You want to know why? The wedding was only recently. I shall commence the cycle of editing once I get back from my trip. But don’t I have the other short films to do by then? Yes I have. Plenty. As much as it sounds psychologically undomesticated in various points, IT IS achievable to work on as much projects without failing to submit your videos to clients. Just manage your time and systematize on what to do, you’ll be fine. It’s fine for me because I don’t have an 8 to 4 job. Or is 9 to 5? Whatever.

Anyways, below is one of my first prototype DVD packaging which I've tried making with Photoshop and printed with my 2 year old printer. Why on earth is that important?!

Happy 63rd Birthday to my dear ol' dad who came back just in time from India (work) to celebrate his fest with the family in Manila. However, due to expensive tickets, I could not make it before the 21st. Instead I'll be going a day after that on the 22nd. Nevermind, I talked to him over Skype earlier on tonight just before he got on the plane and he's really excited to hear me coming to visit and be around him on his birthday.

Boredom Got Me Out Of The House

It’s been like forever working on this wedding video for ‘Liyana & Shah’. Very tiring. Brain is abit slow at the moment but I’ve managed to finish everything leaving the DVD packagin. So…I’ve decided to take my wife out for a drive. Eyan and his wife were also going out from the boredom. We planned to meet-up at Jerudong Park (I know) to see what was going on in this typical Saturday night. Indeed there were many people doing what they usually do best. ‘Lepak’.

I brought my camera along and so did Eyan. We planned to shoot more evening time lapse but unfortunately, it wasn’t that interesting but I wanted to try out that digital (zoom in-out pan left-right method whatever you call it, I don’t know) in post-production. We shot our footages on a full HD 1080p setting so that it’d be easier to transform/control those clips digitally when working on a 720p sequence. It’s amazing really but I’m sure some of you may/may not experiment it already.

But for some reasons, we got fed up. We wanted to shoot something in the day instead. However, I’ve managed to talk to a friend who has access to film a nice view from the top-roof of the Rizqun Hotel, The Mall for sunrise/sunset once I get back from my trip. Should be great shooting time lapse with a rare view.

Other than that, we got into the subject about the Film Fest we’re participating. One of the categories we intend to do was ‘Music Video’. I’m looking at using one of my recent songs which I wrote a couple of months ago to be shot in an acoustic studio-style instead of a full-band. I’ve visualize what I wanted and I hope we can pull this off.
